The Gear You’ll Never Use (And Why You Bought It Anyway) | Episode 577

Opening

There’s a lot of gear that looks cool, feels cool to buy, and then quietly sits in a closet for years. In this episode, I’m talking about the stuff that rarely gets used — the gear you bought anyway — and how to think about whether it was a smart purchase or just fantasy prepping.

Some of this gear is absolutely worth owning even if you never use it. Other gear should probably be getting a lot more reps than it does.

High-End Medical Kits Without the Training

Let’s start with medical bags. You’ve all seen the expensive, tactical, high-end trauma kits. Some of them are genuinely useful, especially when they include things like antibiotics or prescription medications.

The problem is when people buy these kits and treat them like a magic talisman. If you don’t have the training to use half the contents, opening a book during an emergency isn’t going to save you. There are limits to what’s above your pay grade, and it’s important to be honest about that.

That said, having good medical gear on hand — especially if you’re part of a group with someone medically trained — makes a lot of sense. Everyone should have their own supplies. Don’t assume one “medical person” is there to fix everyone with their personal stash.

Pain Management, Reality, and Emergency Use

I’m pretty staunchly against chronic opioid use, and there’s a good reason for that. But in real life, acute pain happens. Sprains, injuries, situations where you aren’t going to the hospital but still need relief.

That’s where judgment comes in. Using minimal amounts, saving leftovers responsibly, and understanding the risks matters. Same goes for things like kratom — not a miracle drug, not harmless, but potentially useful in acute situations if you respect its downsides.

Preparedness isn’t about purity. It’s about understanding tradeoffs.

Men, Gear Fantasies, and Tactical Temptation

This is where male preppers tend to go sideways. Women often splurge on practical tools — pressure canners, grain mills, food production gear. Men gravitate toward guns, knives, plate carriers, and tactical setups.

And look — plate carriers absolutely have a place. If the worst day ever comes and it stops a bullet, it was worth every penny. But let’s be honest: most of the time, it’s sitting in a closet.

The key question isn’t “Is this cool?” It’s “Does this help me in the more likely problems?” Job loss, financial strain, health issues — a plate carrier doesn’t solve those.

Making Rarely-Used Gear Actually Useful

Here’s where the thinking gets smarter. If you’re going to buy a plate carrier, buy weighted training plates too. Use it. Walk your neighborhood. Get stronger. Improve your conditioning.

That turns a just-in-case item into something that actively improves your health. You’re not wearing full tactical gear — you’re just another person getting exercise. And now that expensive gear isn’t just sitting there waiting for a scenario that may never happen.

Preparedness gear should earn its keep whenever possible.

Prepping for Likely Problems Still Comes First

I’ll always push prepping for the boring stuff first. Financial resilience. Food. Health. Mobility. A plate carrier won’t pay the bills or put food on the table if times get tough.

If you’re truly squared away and you have the money, fine — buy it. Just don’t confuse ownership with readiness. And don’t let cool gear distract you from the fundamentals.

Closing

Some gear is meant to sit unused. Other gear should be part of your daily or weekly life. The trick is knowing the difference.

Buy smart. Train with what you own. Prep for what’s likely, not just what’s dramatic.
